Leaked photos of the FHM Philippines 2009 Special Edition

September 25th, 2008

Okay, I think we all need a break from the panic at the Wall Street and the debates on the AIG bailout, their implications to our local economy, and of course the never-ending corruption and profiteering expose at the local political scene. Let’s shift our focus for the time-being, to something more refreshing, or should I say, titillating. I’m referring to nothing but a sneak peek to the (RUMORED) Philippines’ FHM 2009 edition.

Our Gadget Specialist here used all his connections and clout just to be able to get hold some “unauthorized” copies of some truly eye-popping photos taken for the popular men’s magazine. I don’t know if it’s mere marketing ploy, but there have likewise been rumors that this edition is touted as the hottest issue (bordering-indecent!) of the FHM since it was ever published, at least in this country. The people behind the production are likewise prompt in denying allegations of “Photoshop-ing” of some FHM pictorials with popular celebrity subjects. They swear that their magazine is 100% Photoshop-free, and this edition will prove that no camera-tricks, special lenses or camera gadgets used, nor photo-editing techniques employed, but only the traditional, old-style photography.

There is yet an official word which month the said leaked photos would be featured, but one thing is guaranteed, it will certainly make every man’s head turn, and make every woman envy.

So, without anymore ado, here are the million-dollar photos of the hottest FHM batch of demigods.

Maintaining your PC in its tip top condition

September 21st, 2008

There are a lot of ways to keep your PC in tip top condition, and there are also a lot of things that you can do (or not do) to lose your computer’s value in a very short time.  Here are just a few simple steps to properly care for your computers, and maximize its potential and its life span.  All you need to keep in mind, is that like a human body, computers needs three basic things: cleaning, eating, and exercising.  Anyways before you get all confused with my analogy, let’s just get down to it, why don’t we…

Tip #1. CLEAN YOUR PC!

There is always writing information to your hard disk, no matter what you do. Your computer attempts to keep all file information in the same location on your hard drive. As you add and delete files, blank spaces are left between your files. As you add new programs or files, your computer tries to use these blank spaces.

Over time, this reading and writing of files can affect the way your computer performs. The files eventually become scattered in multiple locations on your hard disk rather than in the same location.

Your computer will still find the information. However, the more scattered the information becomes on your hard drive, the more accesses your computer has to make to find (and gather) the information. This requires your hard disk to work harder and do more reading/writing than is necessary. It will slow down your computer by as much as 200% and causes increased wear and tear on your hard drive.

Get rid of the Spywares, temp files, cookies, etc

If you use the Internet, at some point you will download a file or software program onto your computer. Sometimes you will know something is being downloaded to your computer. Other times you will have no idea. (Although this article will not talk about small files called “cookies”, you may want to look up information on this subject. Cookies are written onto your computer from the Internet.)

Free computer programs (often referred to as Freeware) are a big hit on the Internet. Every day thousands of users download these “free programs”. Although there are some great freeware programs, these programs often have advertisements or tracking code associated with their use. The term “Spyware” refers to programs that gather information about your computer and (Internet) surfing habits without your knowledge. This information is then sold to a third party company as a means of generating revenue.

The problem with Spyware is that it also impacts the performance of your computer. It can make your computer very sluggish and unresponsive.

Three Steps to Improved Computer Performance

Now that we’ve discussed two problems that affect the performance of your computer, let’s discuss three things you can do to get your computer performance back to normal. You should do these three steps in the order presented. Ideally, you should repeat them about once a month or whenever you notice a change in your computer’s performance.

Step #1: Delete Spyware

The first thing you should do is to delete spyware files or programs from your computer. To do this, you can use a free software program such as Ad-Aware SE Personal Edition from LavaSoft. To get the program, go to www.download.com and search for “Ad-Aware SE” (without the quotes). Select “Download Now” and follow the installation instructions. Once the program is installed, you can scan your computer for spyware files. Then, you can select and delete them from your computer.

Note #1: Always be sure to use the “Check for updates now” option to keep your program current.

Note #2: You need to be aware that when you delete spyware files, some of those “free” programs you downloaded may not continue to work correctly. If you have a program you’ve downloaded and want to continue to use, check very carefully what you select to delete from the “Scanning results” once the scan has been completed.

Step #2: Clean up your Hard Disk

Once the spyware is removed, you need to clean up temporary and unwanted files from your hard disk. To do this on your windows PC, select the start option in the lower left hand corner of your computer screen. Then, select the program option. Under the program option, select “Accessories”. Under the “Accessories” option, select “System Tools”. From the System Tools option, select “Disk Cleanup”.

Select the drive you want to clean from the pull-down menu and select OK. Usually, this is Drive C. If you have more than one hard drive, select one at a time. This program will then scan your computer for files that could be erased from your computer. You can safely erase all temporary and Recycle Bin files. You can also check the box of any other files you want the program to erase.

Step #3: Defrag your Hard Disk

Once all the spyware and temporary files are removed, you need to defrag your hard disk. This process simply rewrites your computer files so they are no longer scattered all over your hard disk, but are written in the same location for quick sequential access.

To defrag your hard disk on your windows PC, select the start option in the lower left hand corner of your computer screen. Then, select the program option. Under the program option, select “Accessories”. Under the “Accessories” option, select “System Tools”. From the System Tools option, select “Disk Defragmenter”. First, select the hard drive from your computer. Usually, this is Drive C. However, many computers have multiple hard drives. Select one at a time.

You can select “Analyze” to have the program check out the hard drive and see if it needs to be defragged. The program will prompt you at the completion of its analysis. Use the defragment option as prompted.

Note: If you’ve never used this option before, I would recommend that you select the defragment option.

Once, you’ve completed these three steps, your computer and hard disk should be able to operate at maximum performance. Don’t forget to repeat these steps at least once a month or whenever you notice a change in your computer’s performance.

Tip #2. KEEP YOUR ANTI-VIRUS/ANTI-SPYWARE ON AND UPDATED

That’s pretty self-explanatory. Once you get rid of the spywares mentioned above, the work doesn’t end there.  You need to perpetually keep your anti-virus or anti-spyware on and updated, and if possible, stay updated on the latest versions of your softwares. Like you, your computer need to be nourished properly so that it lives its life to the fullest.

Tip #3.  GET INTO THE PROGRAM!

The steps we’ve mentioned above are a good set of habits to pick up. Schedule your PC maintenance on a monthly basis, preferably make it as your own monthly ritual.  Remember, prevention is better than cure.  It is far easier and cheaper to maintain your PC’s good health/condition by doing these simple routines rather than curing the problems that have accumulated and most of the time it gets really bad that you will have to send it to the service center, if not the junk shop.

That’s just about it.  Just keep in mind that as you love yourself and you take care of your body, computers need to be loved and taken care of (like your own flesh) as well, and only then would it love you back (oops, there goes another tacky analogy!)…

Philippe Stark Cherry-Colored Gummy Candy or Wrist Watch?

September 14th, 2008

The ultra tech geeks out there might have ditched their wrist watches for an iPhone clock, PDA clock, mp3 clock, PSP clock or any other clock that is not worn on the wrist, as it tends to get in the way with their 24/7 surfing or gaming habits.  But it does pay to stay traditional, sometimes.  Philippe Stark has recently launched a Crystal Clear Watch just like what you’re seeing in the photo above.  It might not measure your biometrics, or control your mp3 player wirelessly, but it does have some pleasing features, to the visual and gustatory senses at least. The Cherry-colored, gummy-jelly-looking wrist watch do make you salivate, and for those low in EQ, careful, as you might actually fail to resist biting on in it, only to realize, that it is indeed a wrist watch and nothing but. The watch is priced at $125 and being distributed by Fossil.

What’s Wrong With XBOX 360? Takahashi Counts the Ways…

September 8th, 2008

Just a few days ago, the XBOX 360 price list has dropped drastically to the glee of gamers and XBOX fanboys. But before you rush to your nearest game shops, it would be convenient if you first know what a reputable tech-journalist/critic has to say about the XBox. As earlier featured in VentureBeat.Com, Dean Takahashi’s in-depth and comprehensive review of the game console could probably make you think twice about The Box, or not… But before you make that purchase, it wouldn’t hurt to give a listen to what Takahashi has to say, especially his exposes on the billion-dollar losses Sony experienced recalling numerous batch items in the market, allegedly caused by substandard if not completely defective chips of the XBox 360.

Takahashi asserts in his report-expose, that Microsoft refused to address the blatant systemic problems in the console’s production, which reached an astounding 68% ratio of good-bad IBM-made processors (or 16 out of 100) which were incorporated in the consoles.

Some dumbfounding findings of Takahashi which were directly related to the demise of various XBox experienced by users:

Most of the problems pointed to as the cause of the epidemic of Red Rings of Death showed up way before launch, naturally:

In an Aug. 30, 2005 memo, the team reported overheating graphics chip, cracking heat sinks, cosmetic issues with the hard disk drive and the front of the box, under-performing graphics memory chips from Infineon (now Qimonda), a problem with the DVD drive, and other things.

The test machines were not properly debugged, due to an ill-advised cost-cutting initiative that shaved $2 million from $25 million paid to Cimtek, a test machine maker in Canada. The Microsoft team decided not to pay the consulting fee to Cimtek to build, manage and debug the test machines. Sources familiar with the matter said there were only about 500 test machines at the time of launch, a third of the 1,500 needed.

“There were so many problems, you didn’t know what was wrong,” said one source of the machines. “The [test engineers] didn’t have enough time to get up and running.”

The shortages at launch were in fact largely a product of the Xbox 360’s low yields—in Spring 2006, this was the situation:

Microsoft had more than 500,000 defective consoles that sat in warehouses. They were either duds coming out of the factory or they were returned boxes, according to inside sources. The yield was climbing, but far too slowly. The company stood by its statement that returns were within “normal rates for consumer electronics products.”

At that time, the yield rate was still only “an abysmal 50 percent on the first pass. When the bad machines were reworked within the factory, the yield went up to 75 percent –- hardly acceptable.” It’s gotten better now, but still not amazing. As of the beginning of 2008, it’s still only 85 percent—meaning for every 100 Xbox 360s produced, 15 don’t work.

The Falcon revision, which used smaller 65nm chips and had a bunch of other tweaks, like more expensive, better quality heatsinks, alleviated some of the problems, as well as made them cheaper to produce—as many had suspected with their introduction. The latest, the Jasper board, takes that a step further, which Takahashi reports is what allowed them to steeply cut console prices last week.

All of this is just a small cut of Takahashi’s dense, extremely well-reported feature. If you own an Xbox 360, you owe it to yourself to read. [Venture Beat]

Warning: Dusts can crash your PC!

September 3rd, 2008
Computer forensics need not be high-falutin and all technical. For this edition, we will go back to the basics, with our computers. And I’m talking about computer maintenance and proper care.

You read it right folks. Though you might have purchased the best and most expensive and latest editions of anti-virus softwares to protect your most precious rig, It’s not really the trojans, spywares, viruses and spams that could ultimately cause the demise of your PC, but something environmental. It has been the common complain of most lumber or woodcraft and carpentry shops that their on site computers tend to crash rather more quickly and they no see no other reason but the wood dusts “breathe-in” by their computers. And they are unanimous that something must be done.

But of course, don’t be so indifferent about this little information just because you’re no carpenter. Even ordinary house dust and mites which accumulate over time is something that could be potentially dangerous and if your used to shrugging it off, then that won’t work here, not in the long run atleast. You need to control the environment where your rig is located, put all wirings and cables in their place, preferably, tie them up neatly or install wall or floor moldings (those plastic snap-on fixtures) so that they won’t get in your way and at the same time will make your workplace safe.

So for Pete’s sake, clean up your room or workstation - not only for your own health but for your PC’s health and longevity. And btw, I’m talking to myself when I said that, too.

Anyway, one Yahoo! Answers post inspired me to write this and here is the rest of his truly truly helpful (and lengthy) tips on maintaining your PC and, while you’re at it, your own room too!

…wood dust makes a great insulating blanket. That’s okay if you’re lost in a big wood bin and freezing to death, but to a hard working computer it can be bad news. Heat sinks and fans attempt to dissipate the heat from within your computer, but a layer of dust can reduce or prevent this transfer of heat. Also, computer fans can malfunction when dust and grime are allowed to build up. Things heat up. Computers die. Data is lost. Business suffers.

Okay, what’s the answer then? How do you protect your computer from dust?

The actions you are willing and able to take to protect your computer equipment from dust depend on a large number of individual circumstances. Regardless of your situation, I recommend you take a three-front defensive position and optimize for each of the following areas:

• Computer room environment

• Protective computer dust barriers

• Computer maintenance

Let’s look at each of these areas individually.

Computer Room Environment

Control the environmental conditions surrounding your computers. The ideal solution would be to keep your computers and monitors in a clean, climate controlled computer room. In other words, take them out of the danger area. Of course, this is unrealistic or undesirable to many shop owners, who want, or need the computers to operate in the immediate work area.

So what then? Do what you can to control the dust and air pollutants in the shop. Use and maintain dust collectors for woodworking machines and a ventilation system for the shop area. And, if you can’t move the computers out of the shop, try to move them across the room, away from welding, grinding or direct contact with billowing sander dust.

Protective Computer Dust Barriers

These include computer dust covers, dust filters, computer dust bags, and computer enclosures. Each has its advantages and limitations as described below. Determine which option is the best solution for you.

Standard computer covers are made by a number of manufacturers. Usually plastic or vinyl, they are cheap, but effective in keeping dust off your computers and monitors. However, they may only be used while your computer equipment is shut down. And, you must remember to put them on. Every day. In other words, they are almost useless in a busy shop.

Computer filters, on the other hand may be used while the computer is running. Also very cheap, these small pieces of loose mesh material are placed over fan air intakes in the computer case to remove dust from incoming air. Some have experimented with using panty hose, Brillo® Pads and other household items with some success. The main drawback with computer filters is their small surface area. They clog up quickly in dusty areas and must be cleaned, or changed frequently to allow the unimpeded flow of cool air into the computer case. Another drawback is that they leave other openings in the computer case unprotected, allowing fine dust to infiltrate the CD ROM drives, floppy drives and other small openings.

Relatively new on the scene, computer dust bags are a combination computer cover and computer filter. Designed for the harsh, dusty and smoky conditions inherent to wood shops and machine shops, these innovative covers entirely encase the computer processor or monitor at all times, allowing the entire surface of the bag to act as a huge dust filter to remove dust from incoming air. Monitor dust bags have a see-through, anti-static front to allow a clear screen view, and are very effective in keeping dust, wood chips and other debris out of the cooling vents. At around $20 or less, the recommended life-span of the computer dust bag is 3-12 months, depending on the level of dust in the shop. A possible drawback to using the computer dust bag is reduced access to CD and floppy drives. However, it is possible to use these drives if you cut a hole in the dust bag and cover it with a door flap, which is included with the bag. You may also have to cut an access slot to use your USB ports.

Finally, computer enclosures are typically metal or wood, box-like cabinets which your computer processor and monitor are placed in to protect them from the surrounding environment. A variety of fan and filter combinations introduce fresh air into the enclosure. Computer enclosures have the added advantage of protecting your equipment from blunt force trauma, such as a falling 2×4, chemical splashes and other things harmful to your computer. Filters must be changed regularly. Disadvantages include high price, greater amount of space required, and filter maintenance.

Computer Maintenance

Finally, the third part of a sound computer dust protection strategy is computer maintenance. Yes, that means cleaning. Does that scare you? It’s easier than you think. You don’t have to buy all kinds of expensive tools and cleaning agents, and no heavy scrubbing or complicated disassembly is needed. The most important thing is to maintain a regular computer cleaning schedule. It may be as simple as opening the computer case once every three months to blow out the dust. Educate yourself on the computer cleaning basics and decide the right course of action for yourself.

Just as numerous insects and animals perish when attacked by the army ant, a great number of computers are killed by dust every day. Don’t let it happen to you. Follow the common sense ideas shown here and stop computer-killing dust in its tracks!
